One of the main aims of the club is to introduce polo to beginners, allowing them to play cheaply and giving them the opportunity to compete in tournaments. So far this has been extremely successful thanks to the help of our highly regarded professional HPA coach Giles Ormerod and his staff at Druids Lodge Polo Club.
Beginners’ lessons are aimed at a level where little or no experience of polo or horses is required. In fact some of our most successfully players had hardly sat on a horse before starting to play. University provides a fantastic opportunity to learn this exciting and addictive sport far more cheaply then would other wise be possible. Last year’s beginners hosted their own tournament as well as competing in both the arena and outdoor university nationals.
During the lessons you will learn stick and ball skills, riding for polo and the rules of the game. The sessions are a huge amount of fun and you may find that once you start you catch the polo bug and will be hooked for life like many members before!
FAQ’s for Beginners
What do I wear?
If you have never ridden before don’t worry, jeans and shoes or boots with a low heel are fine. We also have helmets and knee pads that you can borrow.
Do I need to know how to ride?
No, many of our members were total beginners before joining the club. Furthermore, polo requires a different style of riding to the standard English method, and its easier to pick up!
What about insurance?
When you join the club, your joining fee will cover you to play in all of the university lessons, chukkas and tournaments.
Do I need to have my own horse?
No, Druids Lodge where we train provides us with horses to hire that suit all levels.
Can I just be a social member of the club?
Yes you can, if you just let us know – you will be invited to all our events, and will also be able to buy any of our stash!
